Announcement of Final Certification of Results in Wolesi Jirga Elections
December 1, 2010
The United States welcomes the Independent Election Commission’s announcement today of the completion of the final certified results in the September 18 Wolesi Jirga elections.
Despite the security risks on September 18, millions of men and women went to the polls and exercised their right to vote. There were irregularities and fraud in this election, but the Independent Election Commission (IEC) and the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) have worked well within the framework of the electoral law and Afghan Constitution. We join the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan in commending both Commissions for their work.
We look forward to the opening of the new parliament so that it can begin taking up its important Constitutional role on behalf of the Afghan people.
