Condolence Statement on Ashura Holy Day Suicide Bombings in Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif
U.S. Embassy Statement: December 6, 2011
The United States strongly condemns the twin suicide bombings that killed dozens of worshippers, many of them women and children, outside of the Abul Fazal Abbas shrine in the Murad Khani district of Kabul, and four additional people in a separate attack in Mazar-e Sharif.
Many of the killed and wounded were marking a Shia holy day, Ashura, when the suicide bombs detonated, nearly simultaneously in both cities.
The United States remains undeterred in standing with the Afghan people against the scourge of terrorism in our mutual aim of promoting peace and prosperity.
Our thoughts and condolences are with those affected by this act of terror.
