ANP in Logar trained by Czech PRT
May 19, 2009, Pol-e Alam, Afghanistan – Afghan national security forces, especially Afghan police (ANP), are often understaffed and lack proper training. The Czech PRT trains policemen in Logar province in basic skills and knowledge necessary for their job.
Security is one of the Czech priorities in Logar. Afghan policemen are the most common target of Taleban and other armed groups. Due to lack of training and equipment, their ability to protect the public is hindered.
"I appreciate the chance to participate in the training very much. For us, such a high-quality course is really useful,“ Muhammad (21), who has been serving for seven months, said.
Muhammad is one of 15 participants. They often cannot read and lack experience with using weapons and survival techniques. Therefore, the training is focused on basic skills such as shooting, vehicle and personal searches, and self-defense, according to Czech trainers. Physical training, first aid, and EOD training is also part of the course.
"Some of our comrades already went through similar training organized by Czechs and they have gained very important experience. I think, it isn’t important if you have a gun, but if you know how to use it," Emahudin (29) said.
The Czech PRT, consisting of nine civilian experts and 275 soldiers, has been assisting people of Logar since March 2008. Supporting education, health system, infrastructure, security, agriculture, irrigation and independent journalism are also among PRT´s priorities. Its annual budget is 4.5 mil USD.
