Ambassador Eikenberry Helps Open Female and Pediatric Ward at Bamyan Hospital
“Health Care, of course, is but one aspect of our broader partnership with the Afghan Government” – Ambassador Eikenberry
U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry travelled to Bamyan today to help open a new ward dedicated to the treatment of women and children at Bamyan Hospital. The Ambassador was joined by the Governor of Bamyan province, Dr. Habiba Sarabi, hospital administrators, members of the Provincial Reconstruction Team, local government officials and community leaders.
The construction of the Female and Pediatric ward was part of a large-scale hospital remodeling and expansion project undertaken for the Ministry of Health and supported by international donors including the governments of New Zealand and Singapore. The ward consists of 13 rooms on the first floor and another 12 on the second, constructed at a cost of some $253,000.
Ambassador Eikenberry hailed it’s completion, saying “clinics like the one we are opening today will play an important role in turning around dire mortality rates for women and infants. The Provincial leadership should be proud of their contribution to improving the health statistics for the entire country.”
The Bamyan Hospital is the only one in the province, serving the broader Hazarjat region.
