U.S. Embassy Statement on Elections Process

We have seen reports in the Afghan media about the United States reportedly encouraging political figures to take part in a coalition government. These reports are false.  As we have already said, the United States' only interest is in a credible process.  We do not support or oppose any particular candidate, and whether there is a run-off is an issue for the Afghan electoral bodies to determine.

As we move through the elections process, it is important that we all support the work of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC).  We urge all parties to behave responsibly and show patience as the IEC and the ECC perform the vitally important functions of investigating complaints and protecting the integrity of the process.
