To the People of Afghanistan:
Please allow me to extend my appreciation for your country’s hospitality during my recent visit to Afghanistan. You, the Afghan people, are making history – voting for the first democratically elected President in your long and proud history, undergoing impressive economic growth and expansion, and this month seating a new freely elected Parliament that truly represents the Afghan people.
The world is watching your accomplishments with respect and admiration. Your country can serve as a model for other nations still seeking to be free. Though the road ahead will have many challenges, please know that you can count on the friendship of the American people.
May the coming year bring you even greater success in building a future of hope and opportunity for your children and grandchildren.
