Today was another historic day for the people of Afghanistan.  Once again, Afghan men and women voted in large numbers – defying threats and intimidation and demonstrating their victory over oppression.  They again inspired people all over the world to remember that the right to choose one’s government is precious.

The United States congratulates President Karzai, the Afghan government, and people of Afghanistan on their victory.  We anticipate the final results will fairly express their wishes.  This election is a major step on the way to Afghanistan becoming a truly democratic nation governed by the rule of law.

The Afghan people have repeatedly shown their desire for a peaceful and democratic future.  We believe that their commitment is worthy of the international community’s continuing support.  For our part, the United States reaffirms its long-term commitment to building a democratic Afghanistan.
