We grieve with the families and friends of those killed in yesterday’s heinous attack at Kandahar’s Abdul Rab Akhund mosque and hope for the recovery of those injured
We share the international community’s shock and outrage at this senseless act of violence at a place of worship during religious services for Mullah Abdullah Fayez who was himself assassinated on May 29.
Mullah Fayaz was a widely respected scholar and voice of moderation that supported strengthening peace, tolerance, and democracy for Afghanistan. We will support Afghan authorities as they investigate both the assassination of Mullah Fayaz and yesterday’s bombing.
Despite these atrocious acts, our commitment to a secure, peaceful, and prosperous future for Afghanistan’s people is unwavering. We pledge to continue our work with all Afghans who share these goals for their nation.
The U.S. Embassy and the entire American community in Afghanistan extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims.
