Kabul, March 21, 2005 – US Ambassador and Special Presidential Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad today commemorated the first steps in building the physical foundation for the new American University of Afghanistan (AUAf) in Kabul.  At a ceremony on the grounds of the proposed University, the Ambassador said that AUAf is “another tangible example of the US commitment to establishing quality education in Afghanistan.”

The university will operate under the authority of an elected board of trustees made up of distinguished Afghan-Americans, with noted educator, Dr. Sharif Fayez as its president.

The initial academic program will include majors in Information Technology Business and Management, and Public Administration.

“Today, as we begin the Afghan New Year, we also celebrate this occasion with a promise to the future leadership of this great country – The American University of Afghanistan,” said Ambassador Khalilzad.
