Referring to comments by Ambassador Ronald Neumann carried by a wire service earlier today on NATO’s operations in Afghanistan, the U.S. Embassy in Kabul wishes to clarify that efforts in the South, mainly borne by some NATO countries, will be helped if Allies manage to further coordinate to provide equipment and troops in support of the operation.
This does not mean that the solution to Afghanistan’s problems is strictly military. In fact, as the Ambassador noted, military action should be a “shield” for development activities, which are key to security, social growth and building trust in the population.
Today’s efforts would be impossible without the collective efforts of NATO Allies.
Afghanistan is an extremely complex State due to decades of war, and no quick fixes are available, military or otherwise. It is paramount that all donors and Allies continue to strictly coordinate in all available fora to overcome this complexity.
