U.S. Embassy Statement on Announcement by Dr. Abdullah on Elections
The United States recognizes the decision by Dr. Abdullah Abdullah not to participate in the second round of balloting in the Afghan presidential elections.
We acknowledge that Dr. Abdullah today has emphasized a commitment to serving the nation and to working towards the national interests of Afghanistan. We fully endorse his emphasis on national unity.
As we wait for the Independent Election Commission to announce the next steps, the United States remains committed to supporting the Afghan people in carrying out a constitutional electoral process.
The United States looks forward to working with the next Afghan administration and with the Afghan people and our partners in the international community to support Afghanistan's progress towards peace and stability.
