Ambassador McFarland Engages Press in Parwan to Share U.S. Support for Afghan Women
On July 29, Ambassador Stephen McFarland, the Embassy’s Coordinating Director of Rule of Law and Law Enforcement, visited Parwan Province to hold meetings with governmental officials, religious leaders, and civil society to discuss the challenges of violence against women in Afghanistan. While there, he also engaged both Afghan and international media during a press conference and private interviews, where he stressed U.S. support through a wide range of initiatives to increase awareness of women’s rights, improve access to legal aid and shelters, prevent abuse, and prosecute cases of violence. Referring to the recent case of Najiba, a woman executed in Parwan by armed men, Ambassador McFarland stressed that the U.S. strongly condemns such violence. “My government wants to show its support for the investigation and prosecution of her case and for any other women who are being mistreated or who are suffering violence,” he added.
