Irrigation system to get badly-needed repair in Wardak province
June 12, 2009
KABUL, Afghanistan - Potable water will soon once again flow in and
around Sayed-Abad, Wardak province, thanks to repairs to the district's
irrigation system.
The governor of Wardak, Mohammad Halim Fidai, the Sayed-Abad deputy
governor, and numerous village elders took part in a groundbreaking
ceremony for the repair project Wednesday, June 10.
The security provided by The Afghan Public Protection Force allowed the
government to begin repairing the infrastructure.
The Afghan Public Protection Force is an Afghan-led program that
provides enhanced security to designated districts in key provinces,
bringing greater stability and strengthened- community development.
The total cost of the irrigation project was $75,531. When repaired, the
irrigation system will provide potable water to several locations in and
around Sayed-Abad, including the district center, a bazaar, an Afghan
National Army station, a local mosque, and clinic.
All materials and labor required for the repair were provided by local
merchants and residents. Now that the citizens have joined the
Guardians, this development project will be just the first among many
that will follow as the Afghan Public Protection Program progresses in
Sayed-Abad.
