U.S. Embassy Kabul 2: (09:57) The Afghan National Police will protect the voters and the election places such as polling sites during the elections.  Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission is in charge of the transportation of ballots.  Civil society can send obersever to the election if the observers are accreditied by the Independent Election Commission.

U.S. Embassy Kabul 2: (09:59) The Afghan security forces are working now with international forces to plan for security for the elections.   In voter registration, some 4.5 million Afghans were able to register.  Only 10 of the 363 districts did not have registration.  This is because Afghans worked together in their communities to support the electoral process.

U.S. Embassy Kabul 3: (10:00) Hi Faruq - Voting day for the elections (both the presidential and provincial council) will take place on August 20.  Candidates have already registered for the elections and the IEC will post preliminary candidate lists outside IEC provincial offices on May 16.  At that time, anyone interested can view the presidential candidates and the provincial council candidates for their province.

U.S. Embassy Kabul 3: (10:06) Hi Sajad - The Independent Election Commission's public outreach campaign is designed to reach all the people of Afghanistan.  The IEC plans to reach people in many ways.  IEC civic educators will begin meeting small groups in every province to explain the election process face-to-face.  The IEC has also designed a poster series to explain elections without words.  There will also be radio and television public service announcements about the elections.

U.S. Embassy Kabul 2: (10:07) Hi Sajad - The US is providing funds to support the work of the Afghan Independent Election Commission and the UN in these elections.  We do not support or oppose any legitimate candidate.  Afghans have worked hard to have the right to choose their own leaders and we respect that right.

U.S. Embassy Kabul 3: (10:18) Hi Faruq - The IEC will greatly expand its civil outreach efforts later this month and those will continue until voting day in August.  IEC representatives will travel to each town to discuss the elections with the people and promote awareness of the electoral process.  This is only one step in their plans to ensure people are aware of the elections.

U.S. Embassy Kabul 3: (10:24) The Electoral Complaints Commission is an independent commission of the Afghan government, created under the electoral law.  Any voter, candidate or party agent with information about a candidate that relates to an electoral offence (something that would disqualify the candidate), can submit a complaint to the ECC between May 16 and 21.  The ECC will investigate these claims.

U.S. Embassy Kabul 2: (10:28) Fraoq and Farhad - Many women did register to vote.  I visited nine provinces in Afghanistan and saw this myself.  Afghan civil society election observers did report that some men registered for women.  This is an error and the Independent Election Commission will not allow men to vote for women.  Each woman has the right to vote her own choices.

U.S. Embassy Kabul 2: (10:58) \Murtaza - This is an important question.  During voter regisatrtion some people in areas under Taliban control did manage to register to vote.  Community support is important.Afghans can support the security environment by making clear to the enemies of the people that Afghans want to vote and are demanding their rights.  The Afghan police and army are working now with ISAF to plan for security for the elections.  The police and army together are in the lead.  ISAF will provide help in crisis response.
