U.S. Embassy Condemns Assassination of the Laghman Director of Provincial Women’s Affairs
December 10, 2012
The U.S. Embassy strongly condemns the assassination of the Director of Provincial Women's Affairs, Najia Siddiqi, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Mehtarlam in eastern Laghman province Monday morning. This attack, especially on Human Rights Day, shows that those who killed Ms. Siddiqi have no respect for human rights or the safety of the Afghan people.
Our sympathies go out to Najia Siddiqi’s family. She was a brave woman and we salute her for her unwavering dedication to women’s rights. Her efforts are remembered particularly since today marks the end of the 16 Days campaign for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The U.S. will continue to stand with the Afghan people and government in the pursuit of a stable, prosperous, and democratic Afghanistan where human rights are respected.
